Hsp104 antagonizes alpha-synuclein aggregation and reduces dopaminergic degeneration in a rat model of Parkinson disease.
Parkinson disease (PD) is characterized by dopaminergic neurodegeneration and intracellular inclusions of alpha-synuclein amyloid fibers, which are stable and difficult to dissolve. Whether inclusions are neuroprotective or pathological remains controversial, because prefibrillar oligomers may be more toxic than amyloid inclusions. Thus, whether therapies should target inclusions, preamyloid oligo
GAD Antibody Positivity Predicts Type 2 Diabetes in an Adult Population
OBJECTIVE-To evaluate the significance of GAD antibodies (GADAs) and family history for type 1 diabetes (FHT1) or type 2 diabetes (FHT2) in nondiabetic subjects. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS-GADAs were analyzed in 4,976 nondiabetic relatives of type 2 diabetic patients or control subjects from Finland. Altogether, 289 (5.9%) were GADA(+)-a total of 253 GADA(+) and 2,511 GADA(-) subjects participate
Computations of the Flow around a Wind Turbine: Grid Sensitivity Study and the Influence of Inlet Conditions
The flow around a complete model wind turbine is computed using LES and the immersed boundary method. The influence of inlet velocity profile and turbulence level is evaluated. The inlet velocity profile was found to have major influence in the upper regions of the flow field. The imposed turbulence level had no major influence on the turbulent spectra but it's effect is clearly seen on the genera
Characterization of insolubilized humic acid and its sorption behaviors
Insolubilized humic acid (IHA) was prepared in the laboratory by heating approach. Through the comparison between the endothermic peaks, optimal heating temperature was determined to be 330A degrees C. The modified IHA then was characterized by TG-DTA, SEM, FTIR, element analysis, and nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms. The removal efficiency of p-nitrophenol from the aqueous solution by ads

Measurement of direct ethanol metabolites in a case of a former driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol offender, now claiming abstinence
A 37-year-old female subject had been convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol, and 19 months later, claimed abstinence after supervised disulfiram treatment. Our aim was to elucidate the value of direct ethanol metabolites as measures of abstinence. Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) in hair, phosphatidylethanol in whole blood and EtG and ethyl sulphate in urine
Animal-mediated fertilization in bryophytes – parallel or precursor to insect pollination in angiosperms?
Bryophytes have until now been absent from all hypotheses regarding the origin of insect pollination of seed plants. The discovery that both springtails and mites are able to transfer sperm in mosses makes it possible to suggest a ’Bryophyte precursor hypothesis of plant pollination’ stating that animal-mediated fertilization in mosses and insect pollination in seed plants is historically linked b
Sex ratio of breeding Common toads (Bufo bufo) - influence of survival and skipped breeding
Anuran sex ratio at breeding sites is typically male biased. Such sex ratios may be due to poor female survival, to females not breeding as frequently as males and/or to males becoming sexually mature earlier than females. In the present study, the first two factors are analyzed in a common toad (Bufo bufo) population in southern Sweden. Toads were captured, marked and recaptured at the breeding s
Cadmium exposure and incidence of heart failure and atrial fibrillation: a population-based prospective cohort study.
Cadmium is a non-essential toxic metal with multiple adverse health effects. Cadmium has been shown to be associated with cardiovascular diseases, but few studies have investigated heart failure (HF) and none of them reported atrial fibrillation (AF). We examined whether cadmium exposure is associated with incidence of HF or AF.
Correlation of the Thanetian-Ilerdian turnover of larger foraminifera and the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum: confirming evidence from the Campo area (Pyrenees, Spain)
Abstract in UndeterminedIt has long been known that a major larger foraminifera turnover (LFT) occurred at the boundary between the Thanetian and Ilerdian stages, but its possible correlation with the Paleocene-Eocene thermal maximum (PETM) was unsuspected until the work of Baceta (1996), and has been controversial ever since. After summarizing the history of this controversy, we present informati
Connecting hygroscopic growth at high humidities to cloud activation for different particle types
This work recompiles studies that have been done with respect to hygroscopic growth in the regime of high relative humidities and with respect to activation for different kinds of particle at LACIS (Leipzig Aerosol Cloud Interaction Simulator) during the last few years. The particles examined consisted of a mixture of succinic acid and ammonium sulfate, seawater samples, soot coated with an organi
Activation of calpain-1 in human carotid artery atherosclerotic lesions
Background: In a previous study, we observed that oxidized low-density lipoprotein-induced death of endothelial cells was calpain-1-dependent. The purpose of the present paper was to study the possible activation of calpain in human carotid plaques, and to compare calpain activity in the plaques from symptomatic patients with those obtained from patients without symptoms. Methods: Human atheroscle
Green LPG
The use of energy gases with renewable origins will become important with diminishing fossil resources. This as the infrastructure of the gaseous fuels is well built out and the distribution networks already exist. LPG is one of the most versatile fuels around, perfect for rural areas and in many other applications. The fossil origin of the fuel will, in today’s climate and environmental debate, h
Heart Rate Turbulence Detection Using Mean Shape Information
In this study, we propose a generalized likelihood ratio test statistic for detection of heart rate turbulence (HRT) based on a linear signal model. The new test statistic, which expands our previous original detector; takes a priori information regarding HRT shape into account. The detector structure is based on the extended integral pulse frequency modulation model which accounts for the presenc

A dynamic object-oriented model for efficient simulation of microbial reduction in dispersed turbulent flow
To account for microbial reduction and food quality changes, first-order chemical reaction was added to a model for axial-dispersed plug flow (ADPF), which was recently developed for efficient (In the terminology of this paper, efficient is related to computation time for a given level of accuracy.) computation of time-dependent, large flow systems. It was shown that the extended ADPF model gives
Explaining the Development of Capital Asset Volume in Swedish Local Governments
This paper investigates explanations of variation in the development of capital asset volume between Swedish local governments, 1999–2008. As a pre-study, four cases were performed, generating 7 suggested explanatory factors. Hypotheses were generated by combining the suggested factors with a new political economy framework, containing two general assumptions. A national dataset of Swedish local g
Concomitant use of Ad5/35 chimeric oncolytic adenovirus with TRAIL gene and taxol produces synergistic cytotoxicity in gastric cancer cells
Chimeric adenoviral vectors possessing fiber derived from human adenovirus subgroup B (Ad35) have been developed for their high infection efficiency in cell types which are refractory to adenovirus serotype 5 (Subgroup C) The present study constructed an E1B-deleted chimeric oncolytic adenovirus, SG235-TRAIL, which carries a human TRAIL gene expression cassette and whose fiber shaft and knob domai
