The impact of six European tree species on the chemistry of mineral topsoil in forest plantations on former agricultural land
Influences on mineral topsoils of common European tree species (oak-Quercus robur L., lime-Tilia cordata Mill., ash-Fraxinus excelsior L., birch-Betula pendula Roth., beech-Fagus sylvatica L. and spruce-Picea abies (L.) Karst.) were studied in 30 to 40-year-old stands planted in adjacent plots on former arable land. Mineral soil samples from two depth layers (0-10 and 20-30 cm) under the different
Evidence for isovector neutron-proton pairing from high-spin states in N=Z Rb-74
High-spin states in the odd-odd N=Z nucleus Rb-74(37)37 were studied using the Ca-40(Ca-40,alphanp) reaction. A previously observed odd-spin T=0 band has been extended to I-pi=(31(+)) and an even-spin T=0 band has been observed for the first time to I-pi=(22(+)); both have a pi(g(9/2))circle timesnu(g(9/2)) structure. A strongly coupled low-spin T=0,K=3 band has been interpreted as being based upo
Single-step affinity purification, partial structure and properties of human platelet cGMP inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase
The human platelet cilostamide- and cGMP-inhibited cAMP phosphodiesterase (cGI-PDE) was rapidly purified approximately 19,000-fold to apparent homogeneity using single step affinity chromatography on the isothiocyanate derivative of cilostamide coupled to aminoethyl agarose. Within 24 h, 30 micrograms of enzyme protein was obtained from 20 ml of packed platelets. Vmax for cAMP and cGMP was 6.1 and
Laser spectroscopy of gas in scattering media at scales ranging from kilometers to millimeters
Free gases are characterized by their narrow line width, and they can conveniently be studied by laser spectroscopy. The present paper discusses the monitoring of such ambient pressure gases, which are dispersed in scattering media such as aerosol-laden atmospheres, solids, or liquids. Atmospheric work basically constitutes the well-known field of differential absorption lidar (DIAL), while the st
Correlated electron tunneling in the single-molecule nanosystems
The original approach to the creation of high-temperature single-electron tunneling systems has been developed based on the use of nanocluster molecules. The morphology and electron tunneling characteristics through single nanocluster molecules organized as highly-ordered monolayer Langmuir-Blodgett films on atomically-flat graphite substrate have been studied experimentally using scanning tunneli
A Probing Control Strategy: Stability and Performance
An extremum controller based on a pulse technique is examined. Plants consisting of the cascade of a piecewise linear static function and a LTI system are considered. Numerical methods for stability and performance analysis of the closed-loop systems are derived. Performance is measured by the ability to track a time-varying optimal point. An illustrative example where it is desirable to control t
Insulin detemir har jämförts med NPH-insulin. Behandlingsstudier visar inga egentliga skillnader
To investigate the evidence behind supposed advantages of insulin detemir over existing therapy (NPH insulin), we carried out a systematic review. We analysed the available documentation presented after registration of the drug by the European drug regulatory authority (EMEA) and approached the data presented at the authority's Internet site. Some data from Food and Drug Administraion (FDA) contri
Structural and Thermodynamic Studies on Cation- Interactions in Lectin-Ligand Complexes: High-Affinity Galectin-3 Inhibitors through Fine-Tuning of an Arginine-Arene Interaction
The high-resolution X-ray crystal structures of the carbohydrate recognition domain of human galectin-3 were solved in complex with N-acetyllactosamine (LacNAc) and the high-affinity inhibitor, methyl 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-4-O-(3-deoxy-3-[4-methoxy-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzamido]--D-galactopyranose)--D-glucopyranoside, to gain insight into the basis for the affinity-enhancing effect of the 4-methoxy-2
Fracture mechanics studies of non-yielding materials like concrete : modelling of tensile fracture and applied strength analyses
Fracture mechanics studies of non-yielding materials are presented. The studies are based on theoretical models for the macroscopical mechanical behaviour of materials during tensile stress induced fracture. A number of applied numercal analysis are indicated. Fracture models and strength relations are discussed also from a few more general and fundamental points of view. A number of comparisons a
Dessutom har elevThe main purpose of this study is to highlight the counselling interview in connection with the choice of upper secondary school from three perspectives, the student's, the counsellor's and society's. The intention is to describe and analyse the counselling interview in the ninth grade with relation to: · the student's expectations, perceptions and values before and after the interviews, · the co

Vertebral deformation in urban Swedish men and women: prevalence based on 797 subjects
Vertebral fracture-deformation, a common feature of osteoporosis, shows considerable age, sex and geographical variation. We present the prevalence in an urban population of south-west Sweden. Lateral spine radiographs of 797 men and women, age 50-86 years, were evaluated by morphomety. The age-standardized prevalence of subjects with vertebral deformation using the deformation criterion -3 SD was

Left atrial appendage outflow velocity index is superior to conventional criteria for prediction of maintenance of sinus rhythm after cardioversion. An echocardiographic study in patients with atrial fibrillation of a few months' duration
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether left atrial appendage outflow velocity alone or in relation to left atrial diameter is a superior predictor of sinus rhythm maintenance after cardioversion compared with traditional clinical or echocardiography parameters. DESIGN: Sixty-two patients with their first episode of atrial fibrillation were examined using echocardiography before DC-cardioversion. At one
Electroatriography - Time-frequency analysis of atrial, fibrillation from modified 12-lead ECG configurations for improved diagnosis and therapy
Current atrial fibrillation (AF) management guidelines suggest that initially a decision must be made to apply either a rate control or rhythm control strategy in the individual patient. However, patients' selection remains substantially empirical and the strategy initially chosen often proves unsuccessful and alternative therapies must be adopted. Thus, it seems desirable to develop and apply tes
Cognitive modeling with context sensitive reinforcement learning
We describe how a standard reinforcement learning algorithm can be changed to include a second contextual input that is used to modulate the learning in the original algorithm. The new algorithm takes the context into account during relearning when the previously learned actions are no longer valid. The algorithm was tested on a number of cognitive experiment and shown to reproduce the learning in
Comparison of monolayer films of stearic acid and methyl stearate on an Al2O3 surface
Both stearic acid and methyl stearate chemisorbs onto an oxide surface of aluminum with an asymmetric coordination of the carboxylate group as concluded from infrared (IR) spectroscopy data. Similarities in the IR spectra of the films from the two compounds suggest that the ester is bonded in the same way as the acid, and that the ester therefore undergoes hydrolysis during the surface reaction.
