Dietary fiber and saturated fat intake associations with cardiovascular disease differ by sex in the malmö diet and cancer cohort: a prospective study.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to examine associations between intake of macronutrients and dietary fiber and incident ischemic cardiovascular disease (iCVD) in men and women. METHODS: We used data from 8,139 male and 12,535 female participants (aged 44-73 y) of the Swedish population-based Malmö Diet and Cancer cohort. The participants were without history of CVD and diabetes mellitus, and

All akutpersonal inbjuds delta i utvecklingsprojektet.Checklists make it easier for the emergency physician. This is the idea behind a website launched this month. The site will contain suggestions for checklists on what information which should be obtained for the assessment of the patient at the emergency department. All emergency staff are invited to participate in the development of the project.

Digit ratio, color polymorphism and egg testosterone in the Australian painted dragon.

Variation in exposure to sex hormones during early development contributes to phenotypic plasticity in vertebrate offspring. As a proposed marker for prenatal sex hormone exposure and because of their association with various physiological and behavioral characteristics, digit ratio and/or digit length have received notable interest within the field of evolutionary ecology. However, the validity o

JNK1 controls dendritic field size in L2/3 and L5 of the motor cortex, constrains soma size, and influences fine motor coordination.

Genetic anomalies on the JNK pathway confer susceptibility to autism spectrum disorders, schizophrenia, and intellectual disability. The mechanism whereby a gain or loss of function in JNK signaling predisposes to these prevalent dendrite disorders, with associated motor dysfunction, remains unclear. Here we find that JNK1 regulates the dendritic field of L2/3 and L5 pyramidal neurons of the mouse

Immunization with syngeneic interferon-gamma (IFN-g) secreting tumour cells enhance the Therapeutic effect and Abscopal effect from combined treatment of subcutaneously implanted contra-lateral N29 tumours on Fischer rats with Pulsed electric fields (PEF) and 60Co-gamma radiation.

The aim of the present study is to study the Abscopal regression of subcutaneously implanted N29 rat glioma after immunization with syngeneic IFNg secreting cells and treatment of contra-lateral tumours with pulsed electric fields (PEF) and/or radiation therapy (RT). The study was performed on rats of the Fischer-344 strain with rat glioma N29 tumours implanted subcutaneously on the flank or on bo

Solar Activity Changes at the End of the Last Ice Age - Influences on Climate and Applications for Dating

Två grundläggande förutsättningar för sådana undersökningar är trovärdiga rekonstruktioner av tidigare variationer i styThroughout its history Earth experienced a variety of natural climate changes. By investigating their spatial and temporal evolution we can increase the understanding of the mechanisms and dynamics underlying natural climate change and improve our general comprehension of the climate system. Prerequisites of these investigations are reliable reconstructions of past forcing variations as well as so

What is killing? People's knowledge about coronary heart disease, attitude towards prevention and main risk reduction barriers in Ismailia, Egypt (descriptive cross-sectional study).

Cardiovascular diseases are a public health concern everywhere, especially ischemic or coronary heart diseases (CHD) which are on top of causes list of mortality and morbidity in both genders globally. From which nearly 80% can be because of modifiable risks. In Egypt, there is a lack of studies on the knowledge of people about coronary heart diseases and its modifiable risks. So, this research re

Mining of public sequencing databases supports a non-dietary origin for putative foreign miRNAs: underestimated effects of contamination in NGS

The report that exogenous plant miRNAs are able to cross the mammalian gastrointestinal tract and exert gene-regulation mechanism in mammalian tissues has yielded a lot of controversy, both in the public press and the scientific literature. Despite the initial enthusiasm, reproducibility of these results was recently questioned by several authors. To analyze the causes of this unease, we searched

Quantitative constraints on the transport properties of hot partonic matter from semi-inclusive single high transverse momentum pion suppression in Au plus Au collisions at root S-NN=200 GeV

The PHENIX experiment has measured the suppression of semi-inclusive single high-transverse-momentum pi(0)'s in Au+Au collisions at root s(NN) = 200 GeV. The present understanding of this suppression is in terms of energy loss of the parent (fragmenting) parton in a dense color-charge medium. We have performed a quantitative comparison between various parton energy-loss models and our experimental

Exceptional Excited-State Lifetime of an Iron(II)-N-Heterocyclic Carbene Complex Explained

Earth-abundant transition-metal complexes are desirable for sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells or photocatalysts. Iron is an obvious choice, but the energy level structure of its typical polypyridyl complexes, featuring low-lying metal-centered states, has made such complexes useless as energy converters. Recently, we synthesized a novel iron-N-heterocyclic carbene complex exhibiting a rema

Search for new resonances in W gamma and Z gamma final states in pp collisions at root s=8 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This Letter presents a search for new resonances decaying to final states with a vector boson produced in association with a high transverse momentum photon, V gamma, with V = W(-> l nu) or Z(-> l(+)l(-)), where l = mu or mu. The measurements use 20.3fb(-1) of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of root s = 8 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. No deviations from the Standard

Acoustic trapping with seed-particles for submicron particle enrichment.

Acoustic trapping in disposable borosilicate capillaries utilize ultrasonic forces to capture/retain micro-particles or cells against fluid flow in a microfluidic-channel. A miniaturized ultrasonic transducer is used to locally excite a 4-MHz cross-sectional resonance in the capillary, creating an acoustic field gradient for retention of cells in non-contact mode. Due to competition between fluidi

Reciprocal Effects of Litter from Exotic and Congeneric Native Plant Species via Soil Nutrients

Invasive exotic plant species are often expected to benefit exclusively from legacy effects of their litter inputs on soil processes and nutrient availability. However, there are relatively few experimental tests determining how litter of exotic plants affects their own growth conditions compared to congeneric native plant species. Here, we test how the legacy of litter from three exotic plant spe

Assessing Holocene and late Pleistocene geomagnetic dipole field variability

Palaeomagnetic studies of continuous geological archives and archaeological artefacts are required to reconstruct geomagnetic field changes beyond the range of historical observations. In this thesis I assess the reliability of sedimentary palaeomagnetic data and Holocene dipole field reconstructions. New palaeomagnetic records are presented from a maar crater lake in New Zealand and a post-glacia
